The Santerno Valley is a varied and articulated territory, essentially consisting of three environmental typologies that are grafted into one another: the plain and gullies medium and high hills mountain. The only solution of continuity is the Vena del Gesso, a very clear and recognizable rocky strip that cuts across the valley. The best time to stay is from April to October, when you can count on a pleasant microclimate, from warm to hot, never sultry, particularly in the Upper Valley. The latitudinal axis of the valley is the river Santerno, very suitable for sport fishing and bathing, especially in the highest part. It offers very appreciated foreshortenings and corners thanks to the fluvial fauna, the rapids and the natural leaps present in the medium-high section. Going up the course (south direction), the spontaneous vegetation replaces the cultivated areas: oak, ash and beech woods host roe deer, fallow deer, foxes, porcupines, badgers and different kinds of birds of prey, signs of an ecologically intact environment. The most protected forest environment is undoubtedly that of the chestnut forest, which appears in the middle section of the Valley; browns, sweet, large and very popular, are protected by the IGP mark under the aegis of Consortium of Castel del Rio.Crossroads of peoples since ancient times, the Valley bears traces of the Roman presence (tombs, burial grounds, a selenite quarry) and, in particular, the demographic increase of the medieval period: the documented castles are 37, to date a dozen are visible. Shocked by the war events of the Second World War, it still bears the signs of the passage of the front, which stopped here for months immediately after the breakthrough of the Gothic Line.
Land of Romagna culture - with strong Tuscan contaminations - and traditions linked to the rural world, the Valle del Santerno expresses a long series of festivals related to food and products of the earth: brown, apricot, porcini mushroom, piadina, polenta, raviolo , garganello. These are, after all, the key elements of one food and wine very rich, linked to the products of agriculture and the territory - including game.
